Funding for learning disabled sport
Wiltshire Community Foundation were delighted to present a cheque for £4,000 from the Foundation Small Grants fund to Swindon Vixens, a new netball club in Swindon for learning disabled women. Funding will help keep the sessions free to access in a safe and welcoming environment as the team continue to expand their membership.
Sue Webber, Trustee of Wiltshire Community Foundation, went along to a session to present the cheque and see for herself the difference that the sport and club is making in people's lives.
Sue said, "What an enthusiastic group - members and helpers all enjoying themselves and having fun together on a netball pitch in Dorcan Recreation Centre on a friday night playing alongside another local club in a training session. Swindon Vixens are an impressive organisation - coaches, volunteers and volunteers from other netball clubs paired with members to develop their skills with warm up exercises, shooting practice, ball skills and a game. We heard that members are so keen to come they don't want to stop for the holidays, even at Christmas, and some have learnt to use local buses in order to attend. The club provides integration, an opportunity to improve fitness, learn new skills and a social occasion. And the volunteers love to attend too."
